The Hotel Pennsylvania’s ‘Cafe Rouge’ was a regular stop for many big bands of the day, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Inspired by the hotel’s telephone number, the band recorded the instrumental hit “Pennsylvania 6-5000” on April 28, 1940 at the RCA Victor Studios in New York City and had a 12-week top chart run. The song also served as an advertisement for the band’s live performances, as a call could be put through to the Hotel Pennsylvania’s venue to make a reservation.
